Dyscalculia is a specific learning difference involving numbers, in roughly the same way dyslexia is a specific learning difference involving reading. Current estimates put its prevalence at 3 to 7% of children, which means there is, statistically, one child per classroom. It is under-identified because math struggle is common and dyscalculia is often dismissed as "bad at math" or "just not a math kid".
The difference between ordinary struggle and dyscalculia is not a single symptom. It is persistence, pattern, and resistance to normal instruction. In most countries, the first stop is the child's school — most schools have access to an educational psychologist or specialist teacher who can do a basic screening. If the school's screening flags something, they will normally refer you on.
